23.5 carat gold leaf and enamel paints on a timber panel
In this series I’ve reinterpreted the classic archetype that can be found in cultures all over the world of a Tree of Life. My twist has been to add Death into the mix to celebrate the cyclical nature of life and to render the tree itself in the majesty of 23.5 carat gold which has been burnished in multiple directions to make it seem like the surface is alive as the light passes across it.
For this fourth painting in the series a group of skeletons dance around the tree’s trunk joyously, mimicking the Matisse painting The Dance while also making a nod to dance around the May pole, a ceremony that celebrates the renewing power of Spring but as a kind of Danse Macabre instead.
The previous three paintings in the series have all sold.
