Painted on 270gsm card using enamel poster paints and 23.5 carat gold leaf
The Ornamental Alphabet series is inspired by the decorative initials created during the Renaissance by artists such as Albrecht Dürer and Hans Hoblein. They embellished each letter as a framed event in itself, their characters were accompanied with intricate scenes of earthly and celestial life - pictures speaking a thousand words around a single letter. This series is my own interpretation of that idea, bringing references to Greek myth, biblical figures, flora and fauna into each character’s composition.
