THE ALPHABET OF ART

S for Surrealism

In 2019 the Tate gallery’s merchandise team got in touch to see if I wanted to collaborate on a series of initial mugs for their shops.

They were interested to see if I could make the designs for each letter relate to a different artist or movement that the character began with. P for Picasso and C for Cubism and so on.

It ended up being one of the most complex commissions I’ve ever worked on, taking months of research, sketching and revising until we finally had a final 26 letters (plus an ampersand for Gilbert & George).

The overall effect was to create a kind of visual puzzle that you could spend hours deciphering to find all the references. The final collection included a poster of the full alphabet, as well as the mugs, to display.

BLAVATNIK MURAL

Tate Modern Launch

To help promote the launch of the collection I was asked to create a mural on the Blavatnik extension of the Tate Modern.

ā€˜SHOP’ along the window display of the gift shop using their equivalent letters from the Alphabet of Art series blown up to a massive scale.
