The Fife Arms

Adventures in glass gilding and sign painting in the Highlands

Over two trips in late 2018 and early 2019 I travelled to The Fife Arms in Braemar, Scotland, to complete broad array of glass gilding and signage work across this refurbished hotel and pub venue.

Windows in the pub, gift shop, spa, dining room and bar were all part of the scope as well directional signage to help guests navigate the maze-like corridors of this 19th century hunting lodge.

The design team were keen for the type reference the heritage of the building. And to ensure it felt authentic they wanted me to design each piece of lettering by hand and if possible on-site. My hotel room became a makeshift studio where I sketched up patterns in the evening to use in the hotel the next day.

The results are some of my favourite ever work. It all sits amongst the incredible art collection that is housed there owned by the gallerists Hauser & Wirth. You can have breakfast by a Bruegel, tea with a Picasso and enjoy cocktail next to a Lucien Freud. Or just admire your reflection in my gilding, up to you!
